In the Roman Empire (27 BC to 284 AD) Terrazzo, Italian for terrace, was produced both in the richest provinces (and in artistic versions with marble pieces!) As well as in villages and estates (there, however, in the simplest versions).

There was a resurgence of the terrazzo trend in the Renaissance (15th / 16th century), especially in the palaces of Venice or in splendid churches. This is also because Terrazzo can withstand a lot: it is cast seamlessly and consists of a durable cement coating that is adorned with the respective pebbles.
In the first half of the 20th century Terrazzo was rediscovered and used for stairways, stations, kitchens and bathrooms. In the 1960s, Terrazzo was replaced by the cheaper carpet and PVC floors and was forgotten.
