Survival in the forest: This woman has been living in the wild for years

A bourgeois life? That did not bring Miriam the fulfillment. The former teacher wanted more silence, less pseudo fights, less hassle in everyday life. And so the Dutch-born in 2010 decided to get out completely: off in the wild!

Together with her husband Peter, Miriam has retired to the mountains and forests of New Zealand. At first only to find out more about yourself? finally, to live an alternative life. Meanwhile, Miriam and Peter are traveling through the world as modern nomads? since 2010 they roam the wilderness.

Her food shoots herself

When Miriam gets hungry, she attacks bow and arrow: "In the past I was a vegetarian, today I have only one chance when I eat meat, if an animal has to die for me, it's only fair that I shoot it myself," says the 34-year-old. Peter, her 30 years older man, is responsible for the planning in the unusual life of the two.

Over the years, the two have more and more skills attained that enable them to survive in the wilderness. Set traps, flee from wild animals, identify edible plants? All this Miriam has learned on her journey through the forests of the world.

From small and big challenges

The adventurer has written a book about her experiences. It means "In the wild I am free"(Knaur, 16.99 euros) and also reflects their life motto: Life in the wilderness? It is a great dream that comes true for Miriam and Peter, they enjoy the peace and freedom away from civilization and they learn that the "little problems of everyday life" do not weigh so heavily in their world.

When she got dandruff problems, Miriam washed her hair with her own urine. "It was disgusting," she says, adding, "Since then, I've never had dandruff again." And what about feminine hygiene? Miriam laughs: "I just go to a stream and wash myself, it's nothing special, women have lived like me for thousands of years."

Regular trips to the city

Do they live completely isolated? No. Miriam drives every few weeks hitchhiking into the city, With street music she then earns a few coins, which she spends in the supermarket for the provisions of the next months: flour, fresh fruits, vegetables. If she succeeds in hunting, does not she have to touch those rations? but in difficult times, this food is their life insurance. Your Cost of living for a year: 5000 dollars.

After returning to the wilderness, the 34-year-old then comes to rest again: "I can not understand the hustle and bustle with which you live," she told a journalist in an interview, "this noise, pressure and sleep deprivation. How do you keep that out?"

Miriam has not only gotten used to life in the wild, she has come to love it despite all adversities. A tough woman who proves to us all that alternative life models are possible, if one dares to break out. That's why Miriam wants to stay in the wilderness for as long as possible? is it the simple life of your dreams?
