Saint Laurent: Controversial advertising should be banned

What is the image of women in Saint Laurent's mind?

It's the year 2017 - and the fashion world has finally discovered feminism for itself. At the international shows from Milan to New York, the designers rely on strong messages. "We should all be feminists" announced at Dior, Missoni wore the models pink pussy hat. It seems all the stranger, as the French luxury label Saint Laurent currently promotes its expensive fashion: With spindly, slightly clad models in questionable poses. From the male view of the female body shaped porn aesthetics instead of images of self-determined women - Who do you want to address with such motives? No wonder the campaign, placarded all over Paris, provoked fierce protests.

Stephane Martin, chief of the French advertising board ARPP, told the news agency AFP that his agency has since received 120 complaints about the poster motifs. Then they had asked the fashion house Saint Laurent to remove the posters and not spread the motives. The photos of thin models in lascivious poses violated the ethical rules of the advertising industrycontinues the ARPP leader. It's about respect for women and the representation of the female body. On Friday, a committee of the advertising inspectorate wants to deal more closely with the case. Some critics see, according to Martin in the pictures a glorification of anorexia, others even a "call for rape". His agency is fighting against the derogatory or humiliating portrayal of people in advertising.

Another poster shows a very skinny woman in roller skates stilettos and fishnet stockings draped over a bar stool like a broken branch. Parts of her back are deliberately rubbish-torn with Photoshop. This trick works even stupider when another model's half head is stamped away. Just why? Because she does not need that anyway? Because this is only about the feet long legs? Or because you want to shock here at any cost? In fashion, weird designs and daring looks are often the way to get attention. But sometimes you shoot yourself into action with such actions - because you should never underestimate women and their understandable anger!
