Obama becomes president - is everything going to be okay now?

It actually happened: Barack Obama won the election a few hours ago and becomes the 44th US President. I can not remember that ever before, the world had kept its fingers crossed for a presidential candidate and then fell into such great rejoicing.

The US is in crisis

Cheers to which the first sober voices are already reacting and calling for prudence. After all, the US is currently in deep crisis, many of which affect us in Germany. And they are right, these "well, slow" pessimists - It is unlikely that Obama will clap his hands in January and in one fell swoop get rid of America's problems that will blow away America with the rest of the world and the rest of the world.

Obama embodies the American dream

But he does not have to. It is enough if he can "only" somehow repair the damage of recent years. And Obama can do that.

Already in his inaugural address, he cleverly used his new status as a flesh-eater American dream to tackle the inner division of the United States. "Our ideals are still working - so let's stop thinking in drawers, we're all Americans," he said. The time of Bush rhetoric, which was designed to polarize as much as possible, is over. And if Obama talks about just a fraction of his speech "new modesty" and "an end to excessiveness" seriously, he might get a handle on the economic dive.

Obama dares the new beginning

In addition, with the end of the "who-is-not-with-us-is-against-us" -beard, the relationship with the rest of the world will normalize a bit again. It looks good for a real new start in dealing with each other. Of course, it will not be easy in terms of foreign policy. On the contrary: Barack Obama will demand a stronger engagement in Afghanistan, especially from Germany - as he already emphasized during the election campaign.

It is clear that Obama will make mistakes right at the beginning of his term. It is quite possible that we will complain then, be disappointed by the new miracle president and delight in "Der Redeemer is disenchanted" articles.

After Bush it goes up

But that will not change the fact that there can only be one direction after Bush: upwards. Even if it takes longer than many a Barack Obama fan may believe in the current buzz of joy. So we can be happy about Obama's historic election victory! Not everything is going well - but a little bit better.
