Non-alcoholic wheat beer: the great summer drink

And if you're dreaming about your next vacation with your beer: Every summer we have a great trip to win!

That hisses! Non-alcoholic wheat beer is a great thirst quencher and just the right ingredient to enjoy the summer evenings. Also ideal for cyclists and motorists, active and sporty women. Alcohol-free wheat beer is healthy: low calories (about 130 kcal / 0.5 liters) and many nutrients. The yeast contains enzymes, amino acids and vitamins from the B group; for example folic acid? they especially need pregnant women. However, they should know that alcohol-free wheat beer always contains a remainder of alcohol. Athletes, however, can safely access them. Wheat beer is a much better isotonic fluid after exercise than expensive sports drinks.

By the way, too Stiftung Warentest tasted non-alcoholic wheat beer. To the result.

Ten beers in the test

We tasted these ten varieties in the ChroniquesDuVasteMonde test kitchen:

Erdinger, Franciscan, Krombacher, Neumarkter Lammsbräu Weisse (organic), Neumarkter Lammsbräu Dark white (organic), Oettinger, Paulaner, Tucher, Schneider, Schöfferhofer

And we have judged that:

  • How stable is the foam?
  • How does the beer smell?
  • How does it taste?
  • Does it affect me?
  • How well refreshed and quench your thirst?

Refreshing, sour, sweet, salty

Unique test winner: The Erdinger Weissbräu, It was perceived as particularly refreshing and thirst-quenching and also got the highest marks in the taste - although the testers here were not at all agreed. The judgments ranged from "caramel" to "sour-sour" to "salty and sweet". Anyway, that was 1st place!

Nice foam, olles outfit

On the 2nd place that came Schneider White yeast wheat beerthat could score with its full and stable foam. However, the taste was judged to be mediocre, as well as the "Anmach" factor - maybe the outfit of the bottle played a role that was judged as "old-fashioned", "charming ostalgic" to "like the hardware store". Luckily for the beer that was not rated.

Smells delicious, but otherwise - well

With some distance on the 3rd place landed the organic beer Neumarkter Lammsbräu white, After all, it had a nose ahead of all other beers and was second in the taste test, but as a thirst quencher and a teaser it only received a satisfactory rating.

Anmacher Quality

a consolation prize there was for that Paulaner yeast wheat beer: Taste could not convince, but won as a "nerd" 2nd place.

Conclusion: When it comes to beer, the ghost and northern lights are different from the rest of the republic. For the (Hamburg) tasters, the beers that taste more like Pils than wheat are particularly good. For this reason, the Neumarkter Lammsbräu Dunkle Weisse least liked. Such a dark beer is well received, especially in Bavaria.

This is how wheat beer tastes best

The bottle necessarily Store cool and standingso that the yeast can settle on the ground. If it is in the bottle, pouring it without foaming becomes difficult to impossible. Therefore, the glass before pouring rinse with cold water, so you avoid an extreme foaming. The typical tall glasses are optimal because the carbonic pearls have a longer way to the top. This keeps the beer fresh and sparkling for longer. Wheat beer always cold - 7 to 8 degrees - and drink quickly. Scarf and lukewarm just does not taste it.

Wheat beer, whites ... what is what?

One beer, many terms: wheat beer, crystal wheat, white, wheat wheat - all wheat beer. It is made from at least 50 percent wheat malt and yeast. The color of wheat beer depends on the type of malt. wheat beer is only a regional variation of the word wheat beer, it is mainly used in Upper Bavaria. White or white is another abbreviation of the word wheat beer. Not to be confused with the "Berliner Weisse": This is a completely different beer, made from other ingredients and different. Kristallweizen is bright and clear. After fermentation, yeast and other suspended solids are filtered out. Hefeweizen is unfiltered and therefore cloudy? tastes also spicier. Yeast Dark is also nature cloudy. Some parts of the dark malt color it brown.

And that says Stiftung Warentest

Stiftung Warentest also tested non-alcoholic wheat beers (issue 6/2010). Our winners were rated there with a "good" (a "very good" was not awarded). The nonalcoholic beers of Count Arco and Schönbuch have failed. In both, lactic acid bacteria were found, which can spoil the beer and also had a negative effect on the taste.

The article points out that none of the alcohol-free wheat beers can match the original taste, even if some producers claim that. The non-alcoholic varieties tasted consistently waterier and less aromatic.

Important: The term "non-alcoholic" suggests that the beers contain no alcohol at all. That is not right. The testers averaged 0.4 percent residual alcohol in the tested beers.

The complete test results can be found at Stiftung Warentest.
