More than a punctuation mark: What's behind the semicolon tattoos

The semicolon as a punctuation mark is probably used by very few people in everyday life when writing. But more and more often you can now see tattoos in the dot-dash formation. What does that mean? There is more than a punctuation mark behind the semicolon tattoo.

The semicolon tattoos tell a story, a very personal story. They stand for fear, lost love, suicidal thoughts, depression, self-injury, sadness, for everything that moves and oppresses people so much that they quarrel with their lives.

The organization "Project Semicolon" wants to encourage them. You are not alone. You can stand it. It's a part of you and that's okay. That's the message. They have chosen the semicolon to show that they stand up for themselves and want to finally talk about how difficult it is to live with these negative and depressing emotions and thoughts.

"A semicolon is used when an author could actually finish his sentence but chose not to do it - the author is you and that sentence is your life," writes Project Semicolon.

Of course, not everyone who tattooed a semicolon is part of this project, and of course, tattoos do not save lives, but every little step of talking about mental health is good and helps create a public awareness.

If you feel emotionally bad and need help, you can always call the telephone counseling, by telephone or chat. You can also get information and help from the German Society for Suicide Prevention.
