Learn Maths: These 6 tips can help your children

Mathematics is a bit of an outsider to many children (and parents). Ignoring is not synonymous. The result is that it is the most sought-after tutoring and every tenth child is really afraid of it. If this also causes real school problems, something has to be done.

So much in advance: Even with the right attitude and a few fresh learning ideas can be out of the outsider a real leader.

We asked the online learning specialist scoyo to come up with helpful tips to help your child learn math.

Learning Maths - 6 Tips for Parents of Maths Muffles:

1. Shows a positive attitude

Various studies show that the attitude of the environment to mathematics exerts a great influence on the attitude of the children. This applies to parents as well as to teachers. Prof. Dr. Silke Ladel, didactic professor of mathematics, says: "The worst thing you can do to your child is to say 'I've always hated math'.?

Especially in Germany, the general social opinion is so negative about math that it is almost conjured up to a fear and problem area. Shows yourself a positive attitude towards math and if it has to be: clench your teeth, smile and wave.

2. Get rid of stereotypes

Girls can do math (at least) as well as boys! Really cool role models do not come to mind spontaneously. Maybe the hacker-ass Lisbeth Salander from the Millenium-Triologie by Stieg Larsson (rather suitable for girls from 14 years old? Hmpf). Far and wide little positive role models available.

That needs to change. Because many educational studies show again and again: At the beginning of the school career, there are hardly any differences between boys and girls as far as the computing skills are concerned. These arise only over time and, according to many researchers, above all through social influences and prejudices.

Therefore from the beginning girls and boys bring the fascination of math? For example, with films like? A beautiful mind? or? The discovery of infinity ?.

3. Shows the everyday relevance of math

Not for school, but for life, we learn. This is also true for maths. Therefore, playfully pick up math in everyday life, for example, when shopping together prices and change check, apples, bananas and Co weigh and price already beat before, make baking / cooking instructions correctly (1/8 liter of water), ... Or enter the path to the grandparents, the school or a good friend on the tablet and search out different alternative routes, then calculate time and distance differences.

4. Creates success

If a child is already scared of math, finding the causes is extremely important. For those who are afraid of math, quickly gets into a vicious circle: The fear disturbs the concentration and processes in the brain, which leads to poor performance, which in turn leads to even more fear, even worse benefits and so on.

Therefore: It works best with child and teacher together on weaknesses and above all strengths of your child. So it can be helpful if parents support their children to learn topics individually. Many benefits offer online tutorials in this regard. The material is thereby discovered in a playful way, which improves the understanding and strengthens the self-confidence. And the fear almost vanishes by itself.

5. Develops a learning and topic plan

Often a topic is particularly frightening when it seems so big that you do not know where to start (we know that yourself). It can therefore be very helpful to divide the learning material into small snacks and set itself small-step goals.

6. Determines what type of learning your child is and uses appropriate materials

Every person learns differently. Anyone who learns early on which type of learning they belong to learns easier and more effectively. This is especially true for mathematics, as abstract relationships are better memorized. A helpful test for finding your own type of learning can be found here.

Creative tools for the visual learner:

  • Use learning posters: Here you will find a comprehensive study poster for math in elementary school, including colorful cut-to-size learning cards.
  • For example, Lego is a great way to get an initial understanding of fractions by touching.

Creative aids for the auditory learning type:

  • Math is also available as music, for example the 1x1 in sung form.
  • Even listening to something makes it twice as much fun (and has the same effect as writing cheat sheets: what is itself summarized is guaranteed - including media literacy training?).

Creative aids for motor learning types:

  • Imitation: make angles with the body or represent simple forms as in Gummitwist with rubber bands or strings, either in small hands or in the group, with a Gummitwist band.
  • Stepping: Sequences such as the 1x1 or primes can be well linked with movements, for example, when climbing stairs or when passing through a room.

Creative aids for the communicative learning type:

  • Question-answer games like an interview or a math quiz can be played very well with siblings, parents or even classmates
  • Specially word problems can be wonderful as a story to tell, reenact with figures or people or even film. That works wonderfully alone or in a group.
