Contact lenses and pregnancy

Pregnancy affects all organs of the female body. The eyes are also affected: During pregnancy, a change in vision may occur, including through the hormonal change. Therefore, both the compatibility of contact lenses and the visual comfort during this time can temporarily suffer.

Possible impairments:

  • Change of the cornea
  • The curvature of the cornea may change slightly during pregnancy so that the contact lenses are no longer optimally seated. Furthermore, the strength of the cornea may increase due to the increased water retention of the body. This can lead to increased sensitivity to glare, especially after prolonged wearing times.
  • Dry eyes
  • At the end of pregnancy, the amount of tears in the eye often decreases. Dry eyes and resulting increased deposits on the lenses can be the result.

Tips

If you notice reduced contact lens wear, poor vision, red-eye or dryness during pregnancy, you may temporarily shorten the wearing time of your contact lenses and have your eyes or the seat of your lenses checked by a specialist.

Only in rare cases you will be advised to temporarily relinquish all the visual aids.
