After the cancer diagnosis: These pictures celebrate life

It's a truly magical moment captured by photographer Kate Murray: A young mother is nursing her newborn baby after undergoing a mastectomy.

The breast cancer was already in advanced stage III and could be controlled only by a mastectomy and chemotherapy, despite the child in the womb. In the 36th week of pregnancy, finally, the birth was initiated early, so as not to burden the baby with further chemo treatments.

In spite of these terrible circumstances, a small miracle happened: The doctors released a healthy little boy, who instinctively clung to his mother's chest and began to drink.

"The boy came into the world and was immediately ready to show everyone how much power he inherited from his strong mom," photographer Kate Murray describes this unique moment she has captured with the camera. "He docked at his mother's remaining chest without help, and there were tremendous emotional outbursts in the room, breastfeeding is something sacred, and that connection made my heart break and open at the same time."

The photos of mother and baby, who fought and held together, have now been shared millions of times on the net and give courage and hope to other cancer patients. Even if it seems hopeless: Often life finds a way!
