In search of the origin of the hatred of the body

Sounds but unfortunately utopian, if you look at the statistics:

  • 91 percent of all German women are dissatisfied with their body.
  • Forty-five percent of healthy weight women think they are overweight.
  • In the US, four million beauty surgeries are performed each year.

Why do women hate their bodies? A question the Australian faces after having given birth to three children and then undergoing rigorous physical training. In the end, she was only one: damned unhappy. An Instagram post she dropped off was the initial spark: To make it happen to her daughter, she set off around the world, searching for the source of her body hatred. Meanwhile, a film and a whole movement has emerged.

After the birth of your third child, you became a fitness model to make you feel better. You had the perfect body? and yet you were not happier. Then, the decision to accept you and your body as he is, like with a few kilos more. Was there a concrete trigger for the turning point?

Taryn Brumfitt

As a fitness model on the competition stage, I thought, "Having the perfect body takes too much time, dedication, sacrifice, and energy." With this feeling, the desire for a balanced life grew. Not only did I want to be physically healthy, but also spiritually and emotionally.

Taryn Brumfitt

I just posted the upside-down "before-after" image to encourage friends who had problems with their body image. I never thought it would be so viral! The photo has been seen by over 100 million people worldwide - crazy, right?

Why did you make your story public?

Why do so many women go to war against their own bodies?

Taryn Brumfitt

There are so many toxic messages for women? and also men? They say that we should be different than we are: 'Do something against the wrinkles in your face and against your orange peel, lose your pregnancy weight as fast as possible'? these messages are omnipresent. On posters, on television and in magazines, everywhere it says very clearly: 'If you're not hot and sexy, you're irrelevant.' The lack of variety in body shapes and sizes further promotes negative body images, because we ask ourselves: 'Why can not I look like this?' ? 'Why am I not so skinny?' ? 'Why do not I look like her in a bikini?'

? Embrace? is mainly about weight. What about other beauty issues like wrinkles, gray hair, make-up, styling and physical disabilities?

Taryn Brumfitt

All these topics are important in the body image discussion. Unfortunately, we could only accommodate a part of it in 90 minutes. In fact, I would fill more than 90 hours if I put everything that I want into focus.
But we have many topics in? Embrace? covered: disabilities, rape, eating disorders, burnt victims, a woman with a beard, celebrities, people with cosmetic surgery, professors, photographers and publishers? I think we have a lot in it. In my program? Body Image Movement? we regularly discuss all conceivable topics. More importantly, we encourage everyone to vote for themselves. It's your body, your rules? nobody is convicted.

If the media plays a crucial role in self-awareness and self-assessment, why are women more affected then men?

Taryn Brumfitt

Women are more heavily attacked than men. Nevertheless, not only women are affected. The problems with the body image affect millions of people worldwide. It concerns us all. It is a topic of humanity not of sex.

What's the worst thing that could happen to your body?

Taryn Brumfitt

I'm not keen on my last breath. I would like to live this life forever, so death is the worst thing that could happen to me.

Who is the most beautiful woman for you and why?

Taryn Brumfitt

Apart from my mother, I would call Nora Tschirner. I do not know anyone who radiates so much strength, humor, humanity, kindness, passion and generosity as they do. These qualities stand for beauty in my eyes and Nora embodies them all.

Program, she launched her mission against warfare against our own bodies. It calls for self-love and gratitude. In a FAQ video she explains that at first glance her arms may look horrible at the first glance, but that they can hug wonderfully. It's about seeing what our body can do and not how it could be even better.
