How your plants will survive your holiday guaranteed!

flowers Sitter

There is babysitter, dog sitter - why not flower sitter? Just ask, maybe someone from your neighborhood would like to earn a few Euros. If necessary, place the pots so that you do not have to hand over the apartment key.

Short process

Some plants such as catnip or daisies can be cut back before they leave. Advantage: you need less water. After a few days, they will be fresh again - and you can expect fresh green after your holiday.

Easy care green

Angel hair and miscanthus: There are plants that rarely need to be cast. In addition to these grasses, the easy care includes many Mediterranean plants such as the Spanish daisy, lavender, palisade spurge, gypsophila and silver sage. Unfortunately, they often cope only with the hot summer, they do not survive an icy cold winter. Basically: small leaves = little thirst.

Get out of the sun!

Put all your plants in the shade before you travel. If you have more pots than shady spots, stretch towels. The flowers need less water, and a few days of shade will not hurt them.

Do not pamper beds

"You do not have to water perennials in beds", garden expert Anja Maubach says: If they were dipped before planting, so the roots were allowed to take a bath, they would never again need water from human hands. Who pours beds, spoil the plants and prevent them from forming roots, with which they can always find in the depth of moisture.

Cover the earth

Potting dries out very quickly. Stones or shells can prevent that. Just put a layer of it on the ground. That looks nice - and the earth stays moist longer.

Put on a diet before

Do not re-fertilize before you start. This triggers a growth spurt, for which the plant then needs a lot of water. Better: you put the flowers on a diet before your holiday - and spoil them again when you're back.

Pot in pot

Clay pots dry out very quickly due to wind and sun. You can sink them for the time of the holiday either up to the pot edge in a bed, then get their water there, when it rains. Smaller clay pots can also be placed in larger plastic pots. But do not pour in too much water, because in stagnant moisture the flowers are dripping.

Bottles in continuous use

Quite simple: Make old plastic bottles to water dispensers. Fill up with a lid, pierce a few holes and insert with a quick swivel upside down into the flower pot. By osmosis, the earth remains moist, the plant can provide itself - but this method is only enough for a few days.

Bullets against thirst

Similar to the plastic bottles, but much more decorative. Thirst balls have a long handle, through which the water from the spherical glass slowly seeps into the earth. They are available in different colors and sizes in the specialized trade. Problem: Some are very difficult to fill, you should pay attention when shopping.

Do not stress, please!

Flowers should be fun. If you have to go to great lengths to care for your plants during the holidays, then look at them like a bouquet of flowers: it will eventually wither - and make room for new things.

Beautiful autumn bloomers

If one or the other flower has flattened after the holiday, plant anew: plump dahlias, colorful asters, fragrant herbs or plain heather. If you want to enjoy the plants again next year, take perennials like anemones, sun hat, fat hens or hydrangeas.
