Doctors warn: sushi can make you sick!

Sushi still enjoys great popularity in Germany, after all, raw fish is healthy and has plenty of nutrients for our body. So far, we have always made sure that the fish to be processed is very fresh. After all, raw foods can contain salmonella. Now doctors in the "British Medical Journal" warn of another danger: threadworms, which can lead to severe stomach pain, nausea and fever.

What exactly is the anisakiasis infection?

In their report, the physicians take into account the case of a 32-year-old man who suffered pain for a week after eating sushi and was eventually hospitalized. Only after a detailed conversation and several examinations, the doctors were able to make the diagnosis: threadworms had triggered the so-called anisakiasis infection.

In the man, the larvae of the thread worms had attached themselves to the gastric mucosa, as an endoscopic examination showed. The doctors removed the parasite. Although the infection occurs so far mainly in Japan in appearance, in recent months, however, were increasingly treated in the West sufferers.

How do you know if you have the disease?

The symptoms of an anisakiasis infection can manifest in both allergic reactions such as shortness of breath and hives, as well as gastrointestinal complaints. The sufferers unfortunately often suffer from stomach pain, fever, vomiting and nausea. If you feel the first signs of illness, you should immediately go to the doctor so that the nematodes can be removed. Once they have reached the intestines, the surgeons need surgery.
