Ben Affleck: So emotionally he says goodbye to Argo hero Tony Mendez

Ben Affleck (46, "Gone Girl - The Perfect Crime") gave an emotional tweet to Antonio "Tony" Mendez, the US spy who served as the template for Affleck's role in "Argo". Mendez was known by the rescue of several US diplomats from Iran. Parkinson's died on Saturday at the age of 78, as his family said the US media said.

"Tony Mendez was a true American hero," said Affleck on Twitter. He was a man of extraordinary modesty and kindness. "He never sought the limelight for his actions, he just wanted to serve his country alone and I'm proud to have worked for him and told one of his stories."



Affleck's film "Argo" tells how Mendez escaped six US diplomats at the 1979 hostage-taking in Tehran, claiming that the ambassadors belonged to a Canadian film crew at the embassy preparing for a Hollywood production. "Argo", in which Ben Affleck also took the lead role, was awarded three Oscars in 2013, including "Best Film".
