Why do not men work in the household? This comic explains it!

Why are household and family management still considered "women's business"? As much as society has changed in recent decades, far too often in families all household tasks are tacitly put on the mother. Why is that? The French cartoonist "Emma" has taken a closer look at the phenomenon - we show you with our permission our German translation.

The men mean well, but ...

The crazy thing is that even in the meantime men usually want to contribute equally to the household. Gone are the days when men have looked disparagingly at the "mom jobs" - in principle, they see themselves as equal partners who help with. The real problem is often that in their own perception, they actually split all tasks 50-50, but unfortunately the reality looks quite different.

The curse of the "mental load"

The bottom line is that many men just do not realize why they give their wife the responsibility. Everyday life just runs like clockwork - how much her partner actually has to do in the background, they realize only when they have to take over even household and family completely (for example, because of prolonged illness of the mother). Draftsman Emma calls the phenomenon the "mental burden": At the same time being a kind of "project manager" for the family, but she has to carry out every single task herself.

"Why did not you say anything?"

And so it happens that many women never come to rest and constantly have to keep in mind a complex logistics - even if they are actually "closing time". The men are unaware of this - and when the situation escalates, they ask in surprise, "Why did not you ask me for help?". The fact that they think for themselves, and even without prompting would have to be active, it simply does not come to mind. Blogger "dennuf" once shared a list that allows couples to quickly determine how bad their situation is.

Encouragement from all over the world

Since his release in 2017, graphic artist Emma has received enthusiastic responses worldwide for her comic strip - even from men who previously thought they were helpful and suddenly experienced a whole new perspective. Incidentally, besides her webcomic, Emma has also published two books - unfortunately only in French so far.
