Walking through China - a year in selfies
That sometimes the way is more exciting than the goal, we know since "Forrest Gump". Christoph Rehage from Hannover provides the next proof with this video: From November 9, 2007 to October 25, 2008, he walked through China, from Beijing westwards to Urumqi, 20 to 30 kilometers per day.
He documented his approximately 4500 kilometer journey with more than 30,000 images. From the daily selfie in front of changing landscapes Rehage made an impressive quick run of his adventure, from which two books have been created. His hair and beard he kept growing the whole time - which makes the length of his tour in the pictures visible. He deliberately avoided a strict "1 picture per day" video to make it alive with some additional motifs.
For more than a year, he has planned this trip, writes Christoph Rehage on his website. He talked to German embassies, studied maps, read books, bought the necessary equipment and got all the important vaccinations. Despite intensive preparation, however, he had to take several breaks and travel back to Beijing to clear bureaucratic hurdles around his visa out of the way.
His first long march took Christoph Rehage from Paris back to Bad Nenndorf, his hometown near Hannover. It took less than a month for the 800 kilometers or so. He had no major metaphysical questions in his head, he says. Rather, he enjoyed solving fundamental problems over and over again: where do I sleep, what am I going to eat next?
These questions he could face every day in 2008. Unlike "normal" days, he did not feel during his long journey: "Sometimes you are thoughtful, sometimes you are not, sometimes you worry about your passport, dangers, pains, relatives and friends, on other days you walk light-footed and sing songs in the desert, sometimes it's boring, and sometimes you feel an inner peace. "
