Too much fat in the body - bad for the brain

Too much body fat is bad for thinking. This shows a new study of the University of Sao Paulo. Seventeen overweight (obese) women, aged 40 years and with a mean BMI of 50, were tested for cognitive function before and after gastric reduction. Less than half a year after surgery and weight loss, the subjects showed better brain performance than before and had better scores for inflammatory markers. These results are also important with regard to Alzheimer's. People who are significantly overweight are 35 percent more likely to get this brain disease than normal people.

Animal obesity has been known for a long time that it is not just the internal organs which are burdened with excessive obesity, but apparently also the brain power. Researchers are still unclear how body fat affects the brain. It is clear that fat cells release substances that spread throughout the body. But until now, the brain has been shut off by the blood-brain barrier. However, it is possible that the substance intervenes through interleukin 1, which has increasingly been found in the blood of obese rodents. Interleukin 1 is produced by fat cells and triggers inflammation.

But if you really want to lose weight, you do not have to go under the knife. In any case, movement is good for the brain, even if you do not lose significant weight - new studies prove this as well. And those who want to try dieting should not restrict their diet extremely. If you save too much on carbohydrates, that's even worse for the brain: depression can be the result.
