Stiftung Warentest warns: Many products for children are life-threatening
Shocking results of Stiftung Warentest on hundreds of children's products! Whether stroller, bicycle seat, high chair or toy? many products designed specifically for children, who should be especially safe, can be very dangerous for our children.
"Some baby highchairs, for example," are designed so that children can slip out and get stuck in the chair with their heads in. Half of the children's mattresses tested do not meet a standard designed to protect the child from choking, and are the straps of certain infant bicycle seats so laxly secured that children easily get them up, "says Stiftung Warentest.
Stiftung Warentest warns: every fourth product for children is deficient
In total, 278 children's products have been tested over the past two years, 79 of which have identified serious safety issues. The results of the investigation presented the Stiftung Warentest in the presence of Minister Katarina Barley. The Stiftung Warentest stated:
Many are not viable or so dangerous that infants may injure themselves or become ill.
In the grip of a stroller, the testers found too high levels of a flame retardant, as well as in the covers of child seats. Children's bikes were loaded with handles, saddles and rubber tires.
Also Spielschleim parents should better keep away from their children: all five products tested should not have been sold because they release too much boric acid, sometimes three times the allowable limit. Possible consequences: vomiting and convulsions. Other contaminants found, such as naphthalene or formaldehyde, can irritate the skin and mucous membranes, cause cancer, impair fertility or cause allergies.
"A particularly big nuisance," says Hubertus Primus, the highest goods tester of Stiftung Warentest. "Because it is easily possible to produce children's products that do not put our little ones at unnecessary risk."
Unreliable babycams, unsafe toys
The testers are also very worried about dangers from the virtual world: Three of the tested smart toys are setting up unsecured connections to the smartphone. Every smartphone owner can listen to unsuspecting children and send questions, invitations or threats.
Another problem: Baby webcams do not warn against a disconnect. In the worst case, the child is crying in bed, although the display indicates that it is sleeping peacefully.
Health Minister Katharina Barley called for stricter controls: "The results are frightening - it's the most vulnerable consumer group." Although an EU directive provides good protection for toys, this is not enough. "All products that children come into contact with must be better protected," the minister said.
But even the large number of annual new releases of products is so great that nationwide controls are hardly possible.
