Socks stuff: That's easy

Socks stuff: That's what you need

  • Stopfgarn: Choose a matching color yarn that is as similar as possible in terms of texture and thickness to the material of the sock to be stuffed. You can also double thread a considerably thinner yarn. If you want to stuff knitted socks, you may even have leftovers of the original wool in the closet. When threading, make sure the thread is not too long so that it does not knot during stuffing.
  • darning needle: This needle is usually slightly duller and occasionally thicker than ordinary needles and has an eyelet to thread the stuffing yarn. You can also use a simple sewing needle.
  • Stopfei or stuffing mushroom: Stopfei and Stopfpilz are wooden objects in egg or mushroom form. They are put in the sock to prevent the holes from contracting and making the job easier. Especially for beginners, they are recommended as an aid, as they ensure a better overview of the "construction site". Alternative: Tennis balls or bulbs have the same effect.

Socks stuff: That's how it works

  1. Save margin: First, you must secure the edge of the hole to prevent further fraying of the fabric. You can carefully cut off protruding and loose threads with small scissors, then line the edge with thread.
  2. Cross threads: Now it's time for the actual stopper. We start with the horizontal threads. Spread a dense web of thread across the hole. Attach each to the security stitches so that they are enclosed. The closer you set the threads, the more resistant the result becomes.
  3. Longitudinal threads: Once the hole is covered with thread, you can work in the longitudinal threads. Start on the left side and work your way to the right. As in weaving, thread the longitudinal threads alternately over and under the horizontal threads and also tie them to the securing thread. The longitudinal threads should be placed close to each other and leave no gaps. This creates a tight-knit and very stable "grid". The beginning and end thread must be sewn thoroughly to prevent the stuffed area from rising again directly.

Not only patching holes in the stocking is easy, including knitting, crocheting, sewing and crafting. And that's also a lot of fun. Cool DIY instructions can be found on our Pinterest pin board. Let yourself be inspired.
