Planting blueberries: care and tips

Bilberry varieties: You must know that

Our domestic blueberries (Vaccinium myrtillus), also called blueberries or forest blueberries, differ from the blueberries (Vaccinium corymbosum), which is often found in the supermarket.

Cultivated blueberries come from North American wild bilberry breeding and, unlike European blueberry, do not stain the tongue and teeth blue. The bushes of the cultivated blueberries bear more and larger berries and are therefore more suitable for local cultivation than the forest blueberries. Among the most popular varieties belong North Country and Chandler

Plant blueberries: planting time and location

  • The best season for blueberries is in spring and autumn.
  • Blueberries can be planted both in the bed and in the pot.
  • Blueberry bushes prefer a sunny and sheltered location.
  • The berry fruits love a nutrient-rich and loamy soil. He should be as low in calories and permeable as possible. Especially on an acidic soil (pH 5,3) the moorland plants thrive well.

Planting blueberries: That's how it works

  1. If the blueberries come into the bed, then the planting distance should be 1.5 meters and between the rows about 2.5 meters, so that enough light comes to each blueberry.
  2. For planting the Flachwurzler a pit of about 50 centimeters deep and 50 centimeters wide should be dug. Important when planting blueberries: Do not dig the planting hole too deep. (If you prefer to pick a pot, make sure that it is relatively wide.)
  3. Use earth bales. Fill the planting hole with rhododendron soil. Bark mulch or sawdust can also be mixed in.

Planting blueberries: the right care

  • To water: Regular watering is very important. Rainwater is especially recommended here since tap water is often too calcareous. Waterlogging should be avoided at all costs. If you are planting your blueberry in a pot, you should drill extra holes.
  • Fertilize: Fertilizing is good, but only in moderation. At best, once in the spring before the new shoot and once in the fall after the harvest.
  • To cut: Only after the first five years should the blueberry be cut. Here, all stems that intersect, and barren branches can be removed.

After the harvest, enjoy it! How about a delicious blueberry pie or blueberry jam?
