So that poppies in the sunny nature or cottage garden, but also in large tubs on the balcony in October in all sorts of colors can shine, they should be sown until the middle of May at the latest. Day after day, they then form new flowers, attracting hundreds of beneficial insects such as bees and butterflies. In addition, poppy reliably spreads itself over its beautiful, lush seed-filled capsules. But sometimes he just can not be settled in a garden, when the soil is too sour for him. Then it is worth sowing in pots and pots with normal potting soil (more on p. 142). Among other things, these three species are native to our latitudes:

poppy

Papaver rhoeas, as its botanical name, is probably one of the best known wild plants. It grows not only in gardens or in meadows, but also on the roadside. Typical are its delicate leaves and the loose growth. Breeds have made the meadow poppy finest and very frugal beauties like 'American Legion' or 'Falling in Love'.

Päonienmohn

With their lush ruffled, fringed, often huge flowers, the filled poppy varieties are reminiscent of peonies (peonies). Therefore, they also have their botanical name Papaver paeoniflorum. Centuries ago, this one-year, partly historic poppy was moved to cottage gardens and monasteries. Päonienmohn recognize you by its strong, erect stems and the silvery shimmering, blue-green leaves. Depending on the variety, it grows to a height of 70 to 120 cm, and its flowers delight with a diameter of 5 to 10 cm. However, on lean soils or in the bucket it sometimes requires small amounts of fertilizer.

Goldmohn

Eschscholzia californica call it the botanist, in the vernacular it is also called Schlafmützchen or California poppy, and since 1903 he is the state flower of California. Gold poppy grows very perennial and herbaceous, grows up to 40 cm high and survives even long periods of drought. The unpretentious annual plants delight with simple or ruffled tulle blossoms. Particularly beautiful are the breeds of the "Thai Silk" series, which stand out for their large filled, folded and two-tone flowers.

Tips & Tricks for sowing and care

  • Field: Since they are very reluctant to pique because of their long taproot, poppy seeds are ideally sown from March to mid-May directly in the field. Gold and corn poppy prefer a dry, sandy soil, Päonienmohn prefer a nutrient-rich garden soil. All varieties love full sun. So that they do not dry up or blow away, the fine seeds are easily covered with soil.
  • Pot: If you want to pull poppies on the balcony or terrace: The plant is best preferred in soft and large (about Ø 12 cm) plastic pots. These are filled with two-thirds of garden and one-third of sowing soil, since the seed does not like a nutrient-rich soil. If too many seedlings are growing in the pot, they must be thinned out. If the plants are about 15 cm high, a root ball has formed, which can be gently pushed out and planted or transplanted.
  • Water & Fertilizer: Whether in the pot or bed: gossip and golden poppy are very frugal, as far as the pouring, and must not be fertilized. Päonienmohne, on the other hand, enjoy every now and then over some water; If they are to grow up nicely, they will be supplied with liquid fertilizer from time to time.
