Obituary: fashion designer Gianfranco Ferré
Actually, he did not look like a fashion designer, more like a wise grandfather with a beard, tummy and glasses. That he also thought differently than most of his colleagues, you could see his clothes on. With his geometric cuts and dramatic silhouettes, he made his name as "architect of fashion". And a brand becomes an empire.
His secret: "I approach clothes like buildings, it's simple geometry: you take a flat shape and turn it in space." According to this recipe, he designed not only clothes with incredible proportions, but also bags, glasses, watches, shoes, jewelry and umbrellas. A men's collection and various fragrances also bear his name. His masterpiece: Infinite variations of the white blouse from clean classic to dramatically deconstructed.
The trained architect was born on August 15, 1944 in Legnano (Milan). In 1973, he started designing accessories, and five years later he started his own business and presented his first women's collection. From 1989 to 1996, he was Creative Director at Christian Dior, after which he took care of the further development of his brand. Even after two strokes, he continued as usual.
Gianfranco Ferré was on the runway for the last time in February. With singer Skin, he had himself celebrated in Milan for his sharp kimono dresses and futuristic silver outfits. He will not be able to see how they are hanging in the store. And we only have one season. Because when winter is over, his clothes will disappear from the boutiques. To show up someday in museums. Because masterpieces belong there.
