Nine errors about drinking

Apple spritzer is the ideal sports drink

"Appleschorle is rather bad during exercise," says Professor Norbert Maassen, sports physiologist at the Hannover Medical School. Studies found that athletes felt slacker when they drank spritzers with high juice content. Scientists suspect that the high potassium content in the fruit juice is to blame. As an alternative, Maassen recommends mineral water or - if the training lasts no longer than two hours - also tap water. Attention: At the latest after one to one and a half hours the body needs but then carbohydrates, so that the blood sugar level does not decrease. The exact time depends on the training intensity and what you ate during the day. A banana helps, in the short term, cola gives new energy. As a precaution, you can add maltodextrin (starch sugar) to the water from the pharmacy.

Drink as much as possible while jogging

Too much drinking can be just as harmful for extreme endurance athletes as it is for too little. The American researchers have found in the investigation of marathon runners. The excess water dilutes the blood and can change the salinity of the body fluids so unfavorably that a sodium deficiency occurs. Sodium is needed for the functioning of the muscles and the nervous system. Possible consequences of the deficiency may be convulsions or unconsciousness, in the worst case even death. "However, problems only occur if you do more than two hours of exercise and drink the wrong," explains Günter Wagner, a nutritionist at the Institute of Sports Nutrition in Bad Nauheim. If you want to be sure, avoid sodium-rich mineral water.

Coffee drained

For a long time: what is consumed in coffee, must be "drunk" on water, because the coffee allegedly dehydrates the body. However, recent research shows that this view is outdated. At least as far as its value as a liquid supplier is concerned, coffee is equivalent to other beverages. According to the German Society for Nutrition (DGE): "The beverage of coffee is an important part of the total daily water intake." In the fluid balance, coffee can usually be treated like any other beverage. " Exception: For people who are not used to coffee, coffee may be temporarily diuretic. The DGE advises not to drink more than four cups a day because of the caffeine content.

Rarely go to the toilet trains the bladder

That is - with limitation - right: "Whoever gives in to any urinary urgency immediately, the bladder trained small," says the urologist Professor Daniela Schultz-lamp from the continence center Villingen-Schwenningen. Better: Tighten the sphincter firmly. According to the Schultz lamp, this has an inhibiting effect on the bladder muscle, and the feeling of having to go to the bathroom fades. However, frequent and exaggerated bladder arrest can lead to chronic overstretching of the bladder muscle, so it loses the power to express the urine, warns the urologist. Rule of thumb: going to the bathroom every four hours is normal. Those who drink a lot should not go to the bathroom more than every two hours.

Mineral water is healthier than tap water

From a nutritional point of view, mineral water and tap water are equivalent. Although German mineral water, in contrast to the refreshment from the tap at least one gram of dissolved minerals per liter (in foreign it may be less), the need for minerals, however, covers each person in normal diet on the solid food. Anyone who wants to or wants to eat low-salt, even better accesses tap water, or selects a low-sodium mineral water. The enjoyment of mineral water can be meaningful for anyone who can not tolerate dairy products. With calcium-rich mineral water (from 500 mg calcium per liter) can comfortably cover a large part of your daily needs. By the way: even tap water contains minerals - the composition of your "house water" you can ask the responsible water supplier.

The more water you drink, the better

A normal woman is on a normal, so not particularly intense sport or hot day with 1.5 to 2 liters of fluid intake. Those who drink more simply have to go to the bathroom more often. To excrete toxins, the extra water is not needed - and it does not look nicer, slimmer and more vital.

Green tea is healthy

Green tea is considered a miracle cure for diseases. The tea is said to have a positive effect on the cardiovascular system and protect it from cancer thanks to the flavonoids it contains. However, there is a lack of studies that demonstrate a measurable protective effect in humans. Another problem is the pesticide load. The Hamburg Institute for Hygiene and the Environment has investigated green tea and discovered pesticides in almost 80 percent of the samples. Every seventh sample was even above the permitted limits. "Tea comes mainly from humid-warm areas and because of the danger of mold fungus pesticides are often used there," explains Thomas Kühn, scientific spokesman for the institute. Kühn therefore advises to stick to the traders who are members of the Tea Association; there were no complaints with them.

Drinking water and eating fruit makes stomachache

The words of our parents are still in our ear: "This gives stomachache," they warned, if we eat strawberries or cherries and then wanted to drink water. Such warnings never got the children of Bernhard Watzl. The head of the institute at the Federal Research Center for Nutrition and Food in Karlsruhe knows that the combination of fruit and water is no longer a problem with today's drinking water quality. He suspects that the parents' warnings go back to times when drinking water was heavily contaminated with germs. These made sure that especially fruits with high sugar content fermented in the water. The result: abdominal pain, bloating and diarrhea.

Cold drinks refresh best when exposed to heat

The tearooms in Cairo are a tradition: tea is enjoyed there even in the heat of the day, whereas we like it more in winter. However, the German Nutrition Society advises to do the same with southerners in order to compensate for fluid loss at high temperatures. The reason: Cold drinks can cause stomach discomfort. In addition, they must first be brought to body temperature by the organism. The energy we use for it heats up in addition. On the other hand, warm drinks, drunk in small sips, barely make us sweat. The slight evaporation coldness that results from this on the skin surface cools the body without adding to the circulation.
