Nightflyers: What can the new series based on the original by George R.R. Martin?

From February 1, the series "Nightflyers" starts at Netflix. Even though its content has nothing to do with "Game of Thrones", the story was devised by none other than George R.R. Martin (70). What the ten episodes of the first season are about and how the first impression is, can be read here.

It's all about this

In the year 2093, the earth is on the verge of destruction caused by mankind. A group of scientists and researchers then embark on the highly sophisticated spacecraft called "The Nightflyer". The crew sets off in the direction of an alien spaceship, where they hope for a solution to the dilemma on earth. But before the journey really starts, strange happenings take place on board. Is the detained boy responsible for psychic powers? And why does one never see the captain of the ship in flesh and blood?

The antithesis to "Game of Thrones"

Based on the story, it immediately becomes clear how much the "Nightflyers" template differs from that of "Game of Thrones" - despite the same author. Instead of entering a fantastic Middle Ages world, it's the future, instead of sprawling scenes from Westeros and the surrounding area, there is a submarine feeling in a cramped spaceship. Only dead, you have to wait similarly short as in the HBO series, the first main character apparently bites after a few minutes and abundantly bloody in the grass.

A certain low-budget look, the series can not hide, although the computer effects, whether camera shots through space or the spaceship itself, basically can be seen. Of the theatrical performance of some actors, this can not always be said, at least in the first episodes. It would not be the first series in which there is still some sand in the drama gearbox at the beginning.

Steady start

In the first episodes the spark did not want to skip properly. Maybe the resurgent "Star Trek" franchise with the series "Discovery" had set the space bar a bit too high. That's why we do not want to see the "Nightflyer" crash.

The plot and the horrific events on the Nightflyer are reminiscent of the movie "Event Horizon 1997" mixed with classics like "2001: A Space Odyssey". If you can and want to get involved with horror elements in addition to Sci-Fi, then you should at least test a few episodes with the "Nightflyers" through space.
