Nausea: How does it develop and what helps?

What is nausea?

Nausea itself is not a disease, but a symptom of various diseases and therefore may have different causes. Often nausea leads to vomiting, because for the body, it is actually a kind of protective reflex: it tries to get rid of harmful substances that are caused for example by infections with viruses or bacteria.

What happens with nausea?

Mostly we feel nausea first through a queasy feeling in the stomach? however, it actually arises in the head. Because the so-called vomiting center in the brain makes the decision as to whether we are getting sick and nausea should arise. The corresponding signals are usually received by the brain through the digestive tract. Causes can be, for example, increased pressure in the stomach or intestines, inflammation or too much alcohol.



Do we always have to vomit from nausea?

Nausea does not always cause vomiting. For example, Nausea can only make sure that we do not re-consume a food that the body has classified as harmful.

What other symptoms of nausea?

There are besides vomiting other physical reactions that may occur as a concomitant symptom of nausea. These include:

  • chest pain
  • eye pain
  • a headache
  • anorexia

  • bloating

Causes: Which illnesses indicates nausea?

There are many possible causes of nausea? not all of them are harmless. Common diseases as cause of the nausea are:



  • poisoning
  • Stress (you can reduce stress with these tips)
  • Infectious diseases, e.g. B. Gastrointestinal Infection
  • gastritis
  • Food intolerance
  • migraine
  • irritable stomach
  • Diabetes (untreated)
  • Hormonal changes, eg. B. by pregnancy
  • concussion
  • sunstroke

What helps against nausea?

Is a serious illness the cause of the nausea symptoms, should the treatment be done in consultation with a doctor? then often by medication. Against the so-called travel sickness there are over-the-counter medicines in the pharmacy. In case of sudden nausea without directly identifiable cause, the following tips help:

  • Relax in a quiet atmosphere. You can lie or sit, depending on where you feel better
  • Close your eyes, inhale deeply into the nose and exhale through the mouth
  • Let fresh air into the room through regular ventilation. If you feel good enough, you can take a short, slow walk
  • Drink a lot ? especially when nausea comes vomiting. Suitable for this are water and tea with ginger or chamomile
  • Abandonment of stimulants such as alcohol, Coffee or cigarettes? these irritate the stomach
  • Should be distributed over the day several small and above all light meals are consumed z. B. rice with steamed vegetables
  • Strong odors should be avoided ? they activate the vomiting center
