My garden in spring: Let's go!

Ten tips for gardening

1. At least in outline, create an overall concept, even if you are going to implement the ideas step by step.

2. Divide the garden, create spaces. And stay in the individual garden areas with a theme, such as. "Bauerngarten", "Rosengarten", "perennial discounts in blue-white-yellow".

3. Now the location is important: how is the earth? The tanning? Thereafter, the choices for all plants. (Tip: many garden centers offer a ground consultation.)

4. First, the dominant large plants (solitary) should be scheduled, then hedges, finally low plants such as ground cover and perennials.

5. If you have a list of your favorite plants, look for suitable neighbors. A very slow-growing should not stand next to a fast-growing plant, otherwise it may be displaced.

6. Growth also plays a role in the size of the garden: for smaller gardens, for example, slow-growing plants make sense, and you do not have to spend too much time with pruning shears.

7. Use ever larger numbers of perennials, roses, hydrangeas, even rhododendrons, to create an image. Individual plants are too restless. Ideal are groups with odd numbers: 3,5,7.

8. The "inanimate" accessories, such as benches, fountains, obelisks and tubs always belong to a successful garden. You can also use this to structure the garden well and emphasize certain areas in an exciting way.

9. Plan plants and trees for all seasons: early spring flowers, autumn colors, summer flowers, winter flowers etc.

10. If necessary, consult with garden specialists. It will be worth it.

The preparation

rhododendron

First, a little check: Do you have all equipmentthat make it easier for you to work in the garden? The basic equipment includes: spade, hoe, small shovel, rake and scissors. If you do not want to crawl across the meadow in the English style with the nail scissors, a lawn mower is also recommended. So that you have something of this long, you should store it as dry as possible. Now to work in spring: First of all, it is important that you use the flower beds of weed Free and prepare the earth for the season by using it fertilize or with nutrient and mineral rich compost Mix. In places where you want to sow or plant new plants, you should also lighten the soil with a rake. Make sure that the fertilizer is suitable for the corresponding variety. For every plant species there are special remedies whose nutrient ratio is tailored to their needs.

Since Johannes von Ehren founded a tree nursery in Hamburg in 1865, gardening has become firmly rooted in the family. In addition to the nursery, there is also a center for private customers since 1995 with the garden of honor. There, director Friederike von Ehren offers everything a plant lover desires: a wide selection of plants, tasteful combinations, classic accessories and detailed advice.

Incidentally, the same applies to the earth: Each plant has different demands on the soil. For example, a normal rhododendron needs an acidic soil that is rich in organic deposits, while a rose needs a very nutrient-rich soil. Therefore, let yourself be best in front advise the plants in the specialized trade. By the way, many garden centers also offer ground consulting; You just have to bring a sample from your garden and the experts tell you which plants are suitable for this.

For your race It is best to treat it with a high-quality long-term fertilizer (for example, Cuxin) - this releases the nutrients gradually, which you can save for the rest of the season, the fertilization. If you are particularly good with your lawn, you can also work it with a "scarifier" (looks similar to a lawnmower) - it is loosened up and freed of dried up stalks, roots, moss and weeds.

In addition, it is now time to cut back shrubs, roses and fruit trees. Repot the potted plants.

The plants

snowdrop

Crocuses, daffodils, winter jasmine, snowdrops - these plants are also resistant to late frost and quickly bring color to your garden in the spring. Anyone who has missed putting onions in autumn can also buy these early bloomers in specialist stores.

In addition, by the end of April you can plant robust annuals such as pansies, primroses or bellis, as well as plants and trees from soil culture, ie those that are not sold in the pot but with bare roots. By contrast, plants from container culture (for example, fruit trees, hedges, shrubs, roses or perennials) can be planted into the summer. For both variants, water well before planting! The "bare root" plants should first be placed in the water for a few hours and simply pour container plants vigorously.

petunias

From the beginning of May (in no case earlier because of the risk of frost), the so-called summer flora will be on the line: geraniums, fuchsias, petunias, industrious Lieschen or the black-eyed Susanne will blossom in bright colors throughout the summer.

You can also prepare for autumn by planting onions for late bloomers such as dahlias and gladioli (best time: April).

The casting

Freshly planted plants need a lot of water at the beginning. For larger trees, it is advisable to create a "pouring margin", ie around the plant to pile up an approximately ten-centimeter-high mound, in which the water can collect. Later you should water as needed, but in no case too much. When the plant gets yellow leaves, many hobby gardeners conclude that it is dying up - which can be a sign that it is drowning too! Mostly, the rain provides the plants with sufficient moisture, only in long dry periods you should often help with the garden hose. If you are unsure: Just dig a few inches deep and feel if the earth is wet enough. In addition, you should check whether the water can seep or possibly collects through an impermeable barrier layer in the ground.

The right plants for shady gardens

Clematis viticella

Even if your garden is not on the sunny side, you do not have to forego lush vegetation. There are numerous plants that grow in partial shade or shade. Especially many perennials come along with little sun and bloom beautifully. For example: Japan Anemone, Hosta (Funkia), Astilbe, Tag-Lilien, several species of Cranesbill, Eisenhut, lady's mantle or hellebore. Shrubs such as the Japanese maple, Aucuben, Ilex, Ranunkelsträucher, Sternmagnolie, various hydrangeas, boxwood, cherry laurel or yew trees also grow in the shady area.

Among the climbers, it is the clematis, which it tends to be darker (Clematis alpina, Clematis tangutica, Clematis viticella).

Herbs are sun worshipers; So pick a bit brighter place for basil, thyme & Co. They taste better too.
