Michael Phelps: He was so depressed that he did not want to live anymore

Former US swimmer Michael Phelps, 33, has an impressive career, winning 28 Olympic medals, including 23 gold medals. Today, Phelps is happily married to his wife Nicole (33) and has two children. But now the 33-year-old confessed that there was a very dark time in his life when he "did not want to live anymore".

This time since 2014 has been. At that time he had been arrested for excessive speed and drunk driving. Afterwards he went into therapy. He was so depressed that he did not even want to leave his room, Phelps said in an interview with the US show "Today." "I had no self-esteem anymore and to be honest, I just did not want to be alive," Phelps said. Nevertheless, after a few lonely days, he realized that he was okay to get help. That changed his life.

But even today he falls from time to time in a hole from which he then has to fight out, so Phelps on. The Olympic champion has already spoken in previous interviews about his fight against depression. For example, in an interview with Sports Illustrated magazine in 2015, he said, "I was in a really dark place. [...] I lived in a bubble for a long time."
