Layering for the skin: Which care products should we combine? and which one better not

Layering: What is behind the care principle?

Different care products are combined in such a way that they optimally complement or even increase in terms of ingredients and effects. If the ingredients harmonize, the products can be applied one after the other. Unfortunately, that is not always the case. While the ingredients of rich creams are usually fat-soluble, lighter lotions are the other way round: they usually contain water-soluble ingredients.

If you first apply a cream and then a lotion on, quickly crumbly cremes on the skin form - and you start again from the beginning. Unfortunately, only a few packs have exact application rules;

Apply layering: That's how it works

It is important that one product after another slowly and carefully incorporated into the skin. Only when product number one has completely recovered is number two in the row.

It is important that the first product evenly mixes with the skin's own lipids before the second product hits the skin. For example, a sunscreen product should be applied only thirty minutes after the day cream

? says Professor Volker Steinkraus, Head of the Dermatologist in Hamburg.

Good to know: With layering, it is not a must that the individual products come from the same manufacturer. Usually, however, they are better matched to each other in terms of their drug combinations than a wildly jumbled product range. Professor Steinkraus explains:

Cosmetic products derived from a line ensure continuity in stabilizers, emulsifiers and activating ingredients. Incompatibilities can also be better analyzed if the products come from the same line, since they usually contain similar active ingredients, such as one and the same antioxidant.

Which products should be used daily - and in which order?

The order in which the products are applied plays a central role. The beginning is - unsurprisingly - the cleaning. "And that is more important in the evening than in the morning"says Professor Steinkraus. The following steps can be remembered in this order: Toning, regeneration and tuning, During toning, the last soaps are removed with the help of a non-alcoholic tonic or tonic and at the same time it prepares the skin for the next care step: regeneration. Serums are particularly suitable for this. They have a particularly high concentration of active ingredient and act intensively and directly. Thanks to their light texture, they penetrate deep into the skin. Finally, "tuned": a tailored to the skin type facial care forms the last "layer".

Tip: Face care products that are not specifically designed for the delicate area of the eye have no place around the eyes. Because our skin is particularly thin here and in the small wrinkles quickly cream residues settle, which, if they are not removed, can cause skin irritation. So: always grab a special eye cream!

Are there any products that I should combine?

Yes, exfoliation and mask for example. By exfoliating the ingredients of a mask can act much better on the skin. At the same time, the mask looks like a short-term intensive treatment after exfoliation.

And what's up in terms of make-up?

Cleaning, toning, regeneration, tuning - they also form the basis for make-up. Melanie Schoene, hair & make-up artist at Blossom Management, advises:

Before applying make-up, remove excess grease with a matting blotting paper. The make-up should fit the day care: on fat-soluble creams fat-soluble make-up, on water-soluble day care water-soluble foundation apply. Liquid make-up does not go well with creams that contain silicones. Here it can happen that the make-up forms ugly flakes.

But what to do if the skin tenses or feels dry in the afternoon despite extensive care in the morning? Thermal water spray is great for refreshing the face. The best: you can spray the spray over the make-up.

Does my day cream with sun protection factor replace the sunscreen?

"The problem is that most day creams do not contain a high UVA filter", explains Professor Volker Steinkraus. "It's the UVA rays that are responsible for skin aging."

And what happens if, after half a day in the office, I spontaneously decide to go to the beach or sit down in the ice cream parlor?

Then you should definitely apply an additional sunscreen, and one that ensures at least a SPF 30 against UVB and a very good UVA protection.

In contrast to serum, the sun protection factor should not be applied over the make-up. "When it's in the sun: down with the make-up and Apply sunscreen 40 minutes before", recommends Melanie Schoene. For make-up removal, wet wipes without alcohol are suitable. And you should always have in the summer next to sunscreen in your purse.
