Last trip: dying Sabine could once again see the sea

Sabine knew she was going to die. Already longer. There was no chance of recovery for the 41-year-old girl with cancer, that was clear. But Sabine S. accepted the situation - and made the best of it. She wrote a farewell letter, even made her urn with her husband Robert and their sons (7 and 11) and put together photos for their own memorial service.

Sabine's companions were impressed

The fact that Sabine S. did not lose her courage until the very end and wanted to make her last time, despite all the hopelessness, also impressed the palliative physicians at her side. "I have never experienced a person who knew that he would die and planned everything so exactly," says Sylvia-Maria Braunwarth, coordinator at the Maltese in Günzburg.

It was also she who finally asked Sabine S. if she still had a heart's desire that could be fulfilled. Finally, only a few weeks ago, the Maltese had bought a special vehicle - the "heart desire ambulance", which can bring the dying once more to their place of desire.

And Sabine S. had indeed a longing place: the North Sea island Borkum. Once again hear the waves rushing, see the sun above the horizon and feel the wind in your hair?

Volunteers fulfilled the heart's desire

That's how it should be! The Malteser team around Sylvia-Maria Braunwarth and Bruno Ollech, Head of Operations Services, organized that Sabine S. and her husband Robert were taken to Borkum and also picked up two weeks later - a last wish, which is completely surprising for the dying has met. We see Sabine S. with her sweetheart Robert drive over the promenade. She smiles, she enjoys - she lives.

Sylvia-Maria Braunwarth: "Sabine S. was so open, she looked the facts in the eye and did not bother with her fate, she was at peace with herself, even in the sadness she always had an incredible radiance in her eyes Robert had a strong man by the side, which impressed me deeply. "

One week after her vacation on Borkum Sabine S. died at home. Thanks to the great dedication of the Maltese helpers their relatives now not only the sadness, but also the memory of two beautiful weeks full of joy and gratitude. And the certainty that Sabine's last wish has come true?

How can I support the project?

The "Maltese Heart Desire Ambulance" is a donation-financed offer for the people in the district of Swabia, who are at the end of their lives and who are no longer able to take an ordinary car trip because of their illness and the associated care costs.
