Journalist murdered? the reaction of colleagues moves the world

Daphne Caruana Galizia died at just 53 years old. On October 16, 2017, the Maltese journalist got into her car. Shortly after she left, the car flew into the air. Her three children could no longer say goodbye to their mother.

Journalist should be silenced

Caruana Galizia was a world-renowned investigative journalist. She conducted research on corruption in politics and economics, about the mafia, reported critically on authoritarian regimes. She also participated in the Panama Papers.

One can say: The 53-year-old was a hero. And she had many enemies. Everyone suspects that she wanted to shut up anyone she had something against for ever.

Offender has failed

But if that was the motive, the perpetrator has in vain loaded a human life on the conscience: For the work of the journalist continue now others. Media from around the world have allied and founded a unique research network.

From the Reuters news agency to The New York Times and the French daily Le Monde to the Swiss Daily Gazette? A total of 45 journalists from 18 media participate in the "Daphne Project". Also German media are represented: In addition to the "WDR" and "NDR" support the initiative "Die Zeit" and "SZ".

Now Daphne's stories are being published

"You may be able to stop the ambassador, but not the message," writes the French reporter and one of the main supporters Richard Laurent on the website of the Daphne project "Forbidden Stories."

And so the news of Caruana Galizia is born in the world immediately. This week "SZ" and "Die Zeit" publish the first "forbidden stories". However, this is about the one event that the 53-year-old herself knew nothing about and which is the motivation behind the Daphne Project: the murder of the investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.
