Jamie Oliver: "The kitchen is a fantastic place for children"

ChroniquesDuVasteMonde: What did you like to eat as a child?

Jamie Oliver: spaghetti bolognese from my mother. For me, food is also a nostalgic thing - I especially remember the moments when I had dinner with my family or good friends.

ChroniquesDuVasteMonde: Today children have problems eating ...

Jamie Oliver: Sure, kids eat way too much junk food and poor quality food: too many chemical additives, sugar and fat. They used to play soccer on the grass, now only on the computer. And parents who can not cook because they have not learned anymore.

ChroniquesDuVasteMonde: What's behind your project "School Dinners"?

Jamie Oliver: I wanted to draw attention to the shortcomings of catering in English schools and to prove the practical importance of good, nutritious food. It's important for teachers to get stuff into physics or geography, but they're failing on nutrition. Children do not know how to eat healthily or even cook something from fresh ingredients ... This is frustrating, because a healthy diet is so important for children growing. Everyone should ask themselves the question: Do you want to live long or become a fat guy?

ChroniquesDuVasteMonde: "Keep it simple", just cook - also applies to children?

Jamie Oliver: Yeah Simple and quick recipes only get people to start cooking. Often at the beginning there is the fear of not being able to do it. But if you cook a light recipe and it all tastes good, you are proud.

ChroniquesDuVasteMonde: What does a good recipe for children look like?

Jamie Oliver: Children want to participate. Take children to a farm or market. Show them when they are shopping, if a fruit is ripe, let them touch it, smell it. That's important and exciting. The kitchen is also an interesting place for children. I love baking bread with my two daughters Poppy and Daisy. But we do not just bake bread, no, we make lips, eyes and ears out of the dough and make funny faces out of it. My daughters have a lot of fun and we bake good bread!

Trendy: "Jamie's Kitchen Shop" in Frankfurt near Karstadt offers everything you need for cooking. Also in Berlin, Munich, Bremen, Mülheim and Nuremberg "Jamie's Kitchen Shops" are planned.

ChroniquesDuVasteMonde: How do you get children to deal with food and food?

Jamie Oliver: I do not think it's a good idea to just put food in front of kids so they can shovel it inside. I think the kitchen is a fantastic place because you can discover so much. Different smells, there is always something to observe, to touch, to shape and of course to taste.

ChroniquesDuVasteMonde: What would be the "right" age to get kids to cook for themselves?

Jamie Oliver: I guess that's between 12 and 14. It depends on how mature they are and if they can be trusted. One must not forget that the kitchen also carries dangers ...

ChroniquesDuVasteMonde: With which food do you make your children happy?

Jamie Oliver: Both love fish and pasta, even though they are only two and three years old. And I have my tricks: If I make sauce for pasta, then I use not only tomatoes, but also plenty of vegetables, eg. Zucchini, pumpkin and leek. First I fry it together and gare it, then the magic wand in - finished is a creamy sauce. My children love it, and in this way I have them underpowered with vitamins and minerals! It works with pizza too.

ChroniquesDuVasteMonde: Is there a great recipe that you can recommend?

Jamie Oliver: Cod and vegetables in a packet - I cooked it with seven children who did not like fish or vegetables. The children stood in front of the stove, watching the packets inflate. Wow, they thought that was sensational! They ate everything, and their parents were totally astonished. Try it for ChroniquesDuVasteMonde
