Highlights are the trend!

Three-tone tone-in-tone highlights

"After a long holiday by the sea or on a boat, the hair never just one color, but consists of many different nuances - just this sun look can produce three-color highlights," said Peter Dawson, Creative Director Color Germany by Vidal Sassoon , In order to be able to place the accents precisely, the hairdresser divides the hair into several batches, places a piece of aluminum foil between them and then brushes the individual highlights with the respective color. Light blond honey, apricot and sand tones, for example, are particularly suitable for a natural blond, and chocolate, nougat and mocha tones are available for brown hair. To make it look pretty natural, the nuances should blend in tone-on-tone. The color tip of Peter Dawson: "Especially hip is the combination of golden blond, apricot and a champagne tone with a delicate pink nuance - the color is not so fast yellowish due to the slightly pink undertone."

Only available at the hairdresser. Two-tone tone-in-tone highlights are also available for DIY (eg "Poly Blonde Duo-Color Strähnchen" by Schwarzkopf).

Low Lights - dark highlights

Originally, low lights, so dark highlights, as the solution for gray hair: Already completely white areas were crossed with highlights in the natural tone, in order to adapt to the original color. Only later did it become apparent that darker highlights also look great on pigmented hair: they set contrasts, give the hair depth and make it look fuller. "This effect is particularly helpful in northern European countries like Germany, where many people tend to have fine hair with a slight ash tone," said Peter Dawson, Creative Director Color Germany of Vidal Sassoon. It is important that the highlights have a cool undertone: "After three to four weeks, the color is easily washed away and gets a little warmer - if you take a warm brown, it can suddenly produce a slight copper tone that you did not want at all," Peter Dawson. Blonde is therefore a clear light brown, to brunettes fits a cool medium or dark brown. Important: To make it look beautiful, the highlights should not deviate more than two shades from the base color.

Only available at the hairdresser.

Highlights - bright highlights

If you want to lighten your hair, but do not want to look bleached, the hairdresser highlights it, so bright highlights: they make the hair automatically lighter, without coloring it completely - that is gentler, looks very natural and is for every hair color suitable. "Even individual games can be set so great, for example, by targeted highlights in the pony area or in the tips," says Günter Handke, L'Oréal Professionnel color expert from Bad Oldesloe. Meanwhile, this is even possible at home: Previously, you had to put on a plastic hood, pull the highlights through the perforated holes and brush with bleaching liquid. Now there are special sets of highlights, where the color liquid was thickened and can be pulled with a mini-brush from the neck to the tips through the dry hair - even with already dyed hair that is possible. If six to eight weeks after application, the approach is visible, one should treat the entire hair length. At some point, however, the hair is blondered by the many highlights, the color play between the individual nuances is barely visible. In this case you can bring darker strands back more contrast in the hair - but they should be better done by the hairdresser. Those who refresh their highlights frequently should take special care, for example with special treatments for bleached hair (eg from Goldwell).

Available at the hairdresser's or home-made (eg "Hi-Light Styliste" by L'Oréal Paris).

Red Lights - red highlights

In the case of brunettes and black-haired people, red lights often do not stand out so much because the initial color is too dark. To change that, brightening and permanent coloration are now combined - so hairdressers can change the hair tone up to five Lift nuances, at the same time inject red pigments into the hair and thus conjure bright red strands. Meanwhile, there are also products that go at home; The color shade can only be lightened by a maximum of three nuances, but the result is almost as nice. Since red pigments are particularly small, they dissolve rather quickly - so the tone can fade after about four weeks, with strained hair even faster.Jana Petzold, freelance hairstylist for Schwarzkopf Professional, advises: "To have some of the look for as long as possible, use special colored hair care products that preserve color, seal the surface, and some even contain extra pigments" (see Page 20). If the color still fades earlier, it can be refreshed with an intensive tint. It is important, however, that the nuance fits exactly - so if you are not sure, you better go to the hairdresser.

Available at the hairdresser or home-made (eg with "Poly Live Wild Lights" by Schwarzkopf).

Freehand technique for highlights

This method, in which the hairdresser applies the paint directly to the hair with a brush or a special brush, has been used for some time, but is currently back in fashion - in New York, for example, they offer star hairdressers such as Bumble & Bumble, Sally Hershberger or Frédéric Fekkai in their salons. Brand new is the preparation of the color: Before applying, the hairdresser thickens the coloring liquid with a powder, so that a viscous consistency is created. The advantage: As a paste, the paint can be brushed on the hair without dripping. In addition, they can be applied in different thicknesses to create a variety of tone-on-tone shades that blend smoothly into each other. "With this technology, the hairdresser can directly implement the sense of shape and color and respond much better to the individual cut of the customer," explains Andrea Hecker, Head of Quality Management at Wella. In order to achieve a really nice effect, the hair in this method should be at least ten inches long - unlike other methods, the approach but only after two to three months to be dyed: Because the color mass is applied so differently strong, no hard Fracture.

Only available from the hairdresser (eg in Wella or L'Oréal Professionnel salons).
