Hella Jongerius: The artful

Her rubber objects are cult, she herself is a star: Hella Jongerius, who never completed her carpentry training, became famous with sinks and colorful plastic vases. The Dutchwoman is considered one of the most innovative designers of our time, she is certainly one of the most provocative.

She dares to put forward theses like: "Who wants to ruin a really good vase by putting flowers in it?" The 43-year-old breaks in her designs with perfection and a smooth surface, she is looking for a new way to deal with familiar materials. In doing so, she relies on the combination of traditional craftsmanship with state-of-the-art technical production methods, in which she combines plastic with porcelain, for example.

The results are plates, vases or furniture somewhere between art and design. Improvisation and a certain degree of randomness allows her to: "You can do a lot with the head and the computer, but in the creative process, there are always reasons to suddenly take a different path." Designing an object, she says, is like "ping-pong between the head and the hands".
