Doris Day: US star dies at the age of 97 years

Actress Doris Day died at the age of 97 in her home in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. The report from various US media on Monday, citing the Doris Day Foundation. Day was one of the biggest Hollywood stars of the 1950s and 60s.

Hollywood's "Clean Woman"

First, Day appeared as a singer of various big bands before appearing in Hollywood in 1947. In the 50s, she was one of the highest paid actresses in Hollywood. For Alfred Hitchcock she stood in 1956 alongside James Stewart in the thriller "The man who knew too much" in front of the camera. In it she sings her biggest hit "Que sera, sera". The song received an Oscar and has been copied countless times.



Absolute box-office hits were her comedies from the late 50s and 60s. On the side of Rock Hudson, she shone in "Bedtime Whispering" (1959) and "A Pajama for Two" (1961). She also owed her commercial success to her image as a "clean woman".

A four-time Globe winner, Day was nominated for Best Picture Actress Oscar in 1960 for her role in "Bedtime" and was awarded the 2008 Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. In the late 1960s, Day's successes receded and she had to struggle with financial problems: her late husband had embezzled her entire fortune during her lifetime. To stay afloat, she appeared among other things from 1968 to 1973 in the successful TV sitcom "The Doris Day Show" on.



Withdrawal from the public

Mid-70s, the actress retired from Hollywood. After the end of her acting career, Day campaigned for animal welfare and founded the 1978 Doris Day Animal Foundation. A short musical comeback came in 2011 with the album "My Heart", which made it into the British Top 10 album charts. Most recently, the Hollywood star lived in seclusion in the posh coastal town of Carmel-by-the-Sea south of San Francisco. The cause of death is still unknown.
