Doris Day: Emotional farewell to the stars

She did not want to fuss, Doris Day ("bed whispering") had decreed before her death. No funeral service, no tombstone. But she was now overwhelmed with affection and honor posthumously. Many colleagues and fans bowed to the actress and singer, including Paul McCartney (76): "She had a heart of gold and was a very funny lady, with whom I laughed a lot," the ex-Beatle wrote on Instagram.

He visited her several times in her house full of animals in California and will never forget her infectious laugh. In addition, she is "in many ways a real star." McCartney and Day have long been friends, both committed to animal welfare. Even daughter Stella McCartney (47) called Day a great inspiration and posted a joint photo.

Oscar winner Goldie Hawn (73) also took off her hat, reminiscent of the shining spirit of the Hollywood legend: "The great Doris Day has gone from us and has taken a piece of sun," wrote Hawn on Twitter. Tony Bennett (92) also said that he would miss her "wonderful smile" and reminded with a video of their joint appearance in the "Doris Day Show" in 1970.

Sarah Jessica Parker wrote her letters without sending her

"Sex and the City" star Sarah Jessica Parker (54) surprised with a particularly emotional tribute: "Oh Ms. Day, a Cincinnati girl just like me, how many letters I wrote to you and did not send," Parker wrote on Instagram to Doris Day, who also grew up in Cincinnati. She never found the right words, but every letter had the same meaning: "I love you."

Songwriter Dianne Warren (62) was brief: Instead of many words, she simply tweeted a series of animal emojis, reminding her that Doris Day was one of the earliest animal rights activists in Hollywood. Day would have liked that for sure. She had asked that instead of expressing condolences, one should rather visit the website of her animal welfare foundation. On Monday, Doris Day died at the age of 97 from the effects of pneumonia.
