Disabled: What do you live from when there is no salary?

Do you have a big fortune? Then you do not have to read any further: You are not dependent on your salary to live and therefore you do not have to protect yourself in the event that you get sick and can no longer work. For all others, however, consumer advocates and insurance experts strongly recommend that they take out occupational disability insurance.

It affects men as well as women

Because in the course of working life it meets now well one in four - men on average with 48, women with 46 years, according to a survey of the Association of the German Insurance Industry (GDV). "In some professions, premature retirement from work is already the norm," says ChroniquesDuVasteMonde financial expert Helma Sick. In her deliberations, she repeatedly experiences how much this risk is repressed. "People are thinking: Nothing will happen to me, or this insurance is too expensive, or accident insurance is much cheaper and secures me well." But that is a fallacy. In the rarest cases, occupational disability occurs after an accident, with women it is even only four percent. According to the GDV, the more common reasons include mental illnesses (women: 30 percent, men: 22 percent), cancer (22 and 16 percent), and musculoskeletal disorders (14 and 21 percent, respectively).

The BU is like a monthly pension

If you have insured against it, the disability insurance (BU) pays a monthly pension, as soon as the job can only be exercised to 50 percent or less. 3.6 billion euros, the insurance in 2016 paid for it.

The catch is: The road to insurance can be tedious and complicated. Does not help. Here we explain what to look for and answer the most important questions:

  • What does the insurance company want to know?

The questionnaire is very detailed, but it must be answered truthfully and completely, otherwise the insurance company may refuse payment in an emergency. How old are you? Do you work in the office? Climb, smoke, ride? How much do you weigh? These are the simple questions. For those with pre-existing conditions, you should take your time, review your records, and fill out the forms with the help of your doctors and a specialist insurance advisor. Were there hospital stays? Operations? Do you have allergies, are you taking medication? Have you been treated by doctors, alternative practitioners or psychotherapists? Because of what diseases? Some insurance companies have been asking these questions for the past five years, and some want to know everything for the last ten years.
  • How does the tariff come about?

In addition to the pre-existing diseases, age also plays a role, similar to the term life insurance: the younger (and healthier) you are, the cheaper it gets. And: The more "dangerous" the job, so the higher for the insurer the probability of having to pay off a pension at some point, the more expensive the contribution. You can clearly see this in the tariffs that the independent analysis house Morgen & Morgen has compiled for ChroniquesDuVasteMonde readers: We calculated them for two sample customers. Except for the profession, all their characteristics (age, weight, nonsmoker etc.) are identical. But one is a nurse, the other office clerk. If both at 30 years of insurance over 1500 euro pension, the nurse has to pay more than 70 euros per month for more than the office clerk. And for both, the contribution will be significantly higher if they would only complete the insurance at the age of 45.
  • Which professions are getting away favorably?

All those who, according to statistics, have relatively few cases of occupational disability. Mostly the office jobs. Occupations with high physical and / or psychological burdens, such as roofers, bakers, geriatric nurses or nurses are considered risky. That is also the reason why morning and morning nurse only 52 tariffs at 24 providers, for the office clerk but 85 rates at 37 providers. In the meantime, insurers have continued to diversify their occupational groups and generally reject some; the Association of insured therefore speaks critically of "cherry picking".
  • What characterizes the top rates?

All are independent occupational disability insurance. There are also tariffs in combination with a term life insurance, but for better comparability we have concentrated on the "pure" BU.

Renouncement of abstract reference: If the customer can no longer practice her previous occupation, she will receive the agreed benefits - and will not be referred to any other activity that she could theoretically pursue.

It is only checked whether the insured the last practiced occupation can not exercise and not one she might have had ten years ago.

Six-month forecast: Disability is recognized if the doctor forecasts it for six months.

Retroactive performance in case of late notification: If the invalidity is reported late, the insurer pays retroactively at least up to three years.

Post deferral: Until the decision on the application, the insured must pay no further contributions. (If the pension is paid, then no contributions are due anyway.) For one and the same customer, there may be price differences of up to 500 percent. Tip: do not be discouraged, but check several offers in peace and together with a consultant.
