John Kinsella (Henry Garrett), a young boxer from Midsomer, has become world middleweight champion. Manor owner Gerald Farquaharson (Kevin McNally) invites the barnabies to the celebration. Barnaby (John Nettles) notes that many old hostilities are smoldering between those present. The conflicts openly break out as a historical boxing match from 1860 is re-staged. The dead is the wealthy Kitty Pottinger, once again on alcohol withdrawal and the last hope of operator pair Phoebe (Lesley Manville) and Luke Archbold (Jason Durr). Because Swavely Manor is about to collapse financially. Sergeant Jones looks for Kitty's vulgar husband Kenny. When Luke Archbold is found crushed by one of his fitness equipment, Jones suspects who might be the culprit.

During the Leipzig Book Fair, literary agent Ulrike Oppermann was found dead. The murdered woman seems to be the famous star author Mimi Blaise whose true identity was unknown to anyone. The chief inspectors Ehrlich (Peter Sodann) and Kain (Bernd Michael Lade) initially suspected the policeman Matthias Erler for having spent the last night with the victim. Police Superintendent Anna Stein (Annika Blendl) enters the case. She wants to prove the innocence of her colleague.
