There he sits, carved in stone and six and a half meters high: Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa. In the womb of the emperor lies a male corpse. Quickly, the identity of the dead can be determined. Professor Welfen, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine in Halle, cut his throat. Although papers, money and car keys were stolen, the commissars Schmücke (Jaecki Schwarz) and Schneider (Wolfgang Winkler) believe for a second that they are dealing with a robbery, because nothing suggests a fight and too unusual is the locality.

Carla Constanza, model and face of Brazilian cigarette brand Monarch Tobacco, is strangled in the notorious Raven's Wood. But Inspector Barnaby (John Nettles) and Sergeant Troy (Daniel Casey) not only have to solve this murder, but three more identical, unresolved murders of young girls eight years earlier. John Merrill (Nick Farrell), cynical marketing director of Monarch Tobacco, is the prime suspect. His watch was found near the body.
