A newspaper messenger was run over. A tragic accident or is there more to it? Marie Brand (Mariele Millowitsch) and her colleague Jürgen Simmel (Hinnerk Schönemann) take up the investigation. They quickly find out that it is an assassination attempt on the teacher Lena Böhmer. Suspected is the owner of the Tatfahrzeugs, Oliver Renski (Rainer Sellien), who claims that his car has been stolen, but for the time of the crime has no alibi.

It quickly turns out that several people present had a motive for the murder. Especially professor Marie Rosnicek (Monica Bleibtreu), dazzling star of the dentists' guild, is coming into focus. Both she and her daughter Mendy (Edita Malovcic) had an affair with the dead man.

After a celebration, a woman is found seriously injured in the street. Ekkis (Oliver Korittke) car is very close. Anna Springer (Rita Russek) arrests the hangover Ekki, but he refuses to say anything. Wilsberg (Leonard Lansink), however, does not believe that Ekki has committed a runaway. He meets Klas Teunissen (Jörg Schüttauf), an old school friend. This assures him that Ekki was not at the wheel. But Ekki suddenly claims that Wilsberg drove the car himself. Something is wrong here. Wilsberg follows his instinct and inspects Klas' apartment.

The last joint case puzzles detective chief inspector Lenski and chief police officer Krause: A young man, Daniel Reef, hangs in a tree - apparently a pilot who has fallen out of his plane. But there is no trace of the plane. The man's cell phone shows a young woman who must have flown with her. Lenski and Krause are alarmed: Is the plane still in the air? Krause takes the case very much, since he knows the family Reef well and had a close relationship with Daniel.

The story takes place in 1988. For a few seconds, Hartmut Menkhaus (Leo Bardischewski) recognizes a face that he could never forget: it is Martin Scholko (Wolf-Dietrich Berg), the man to whom Menkhaus owes eleven years of Bautzen. Shortly after this encounter Astrid Nicolay was found dead - a former secretary of the transport entrepreneur Peter Kurbis (Christoph Quest), for whom also Scholko had worked. In search of a motive for this initially inexplicable murder, the commissars Stoever (Manfred Krug) and Brockmöller (Charles Brauer) penetrate into an oppressive chapter of German-German history.
