Chills: How does it arise and what helps?

What is chills?

In shivering, the muscles contract quickly and then relax again (contraction). The affected person usually feels a cold sensation, it comes to uncontrolled tremors all over ? even when he is actually sitting in the warm. Chills often occur in short spurts for a few minutes. Muscle tremor is extremely stressful - especially when the body is fighting pathogens in parallel, sufferers feel very exhausted after a push and fall asleep frequently.

Why do we get chills?

Although chills are unpleasant, but for the body, it is indispensablebecause the contractions generate heat. The normal body temperature is 37 degrees ("set point"). With an infection, however, this setpoint increases, because pathogens can be better controlled in mild fever. For this, so-called pyrogens are released: These pyrogens signal the brain to raise the temperature.

The hypothalamus, which is part of the diencephalon, responds to this signal and gives the command to adjust to the new setpoint. Especially with severe infections such as the flu, this adaptation must happen quickly ? This causes chills.

What causes chills?

Most chills are themselves a symptom and due to infectious diseases, which are usually associated with fever, for example:

  • Flu cold
  • scarlet
  • blood poisoning
  • lung infection
  • Pyelonephritis
  • Hodenentzündung

Chills can also occur without fever. In this case, the following causes may exist:
  • withdrawal symptoms
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • hypothermia
  • poisoning
  • Heat stroke / sunstroke
  • Mental illnesses (eg ADHD)

What helps against the muscle tremor?

Usually the chills are not the problem but the disease that underlies it. That's why it should be treated sooner. If an infection like the flu is the cause, the following tips will help:

  • Heat, for example through a footbath or a hot water bottle
  • Drink a lot: At an elevated level body temperature should be at least half a liter more drunk
  • Calf wrap (lowers fever)
  • Tea, for example, with sweaty lime blossom
  • Quiet

It is different when a heat stroke or a sunstroke is the cause of the muscle tremor. In the case, the first thing to do is: The sufferer must be in the shade and should sit at the best. Then the following tips help with cooling:

  • Cool, damp envelopes (for the head, neck and calf wrap)
  • Drink a lot

In addition, a doctor should always be contacted.
