Build a bird house yourself: This is how it is done step by step

© Peter Fehrentz

Look, who's there: If blackbird, sparrow, tit and Co. fly to the design houses made of spruce wood, the hosts have something to look at.

You can download the templates here and here and copy them to the desired size in the copy shop. You will also need spruce wood, acrylic paint, brushes, X-Spax screws, approx. 20 mm long, 4 mm, cordless screwdriver, pot drill attachment, round wood 8 mm, pencil, scissors, jigsaw, sandpaper, file.

That's how it's done:

  1. Cut out the large copied template, transfer to the wood. Saw off the individual parts and chamfer the hatched areas in the plan using the file.
  2. Drill a hole in the front with a pot drill attachment as a bird's entrance. Below it drill a small hole (8 mm) for the roundwood.
  3. Approximately Saw off 5 cm of roundwood, varnish in color, this will later become the landing station. Put together the parts of the house roughly and see if everything fits, if necessary rework.
  4. Then pre-drill the red points for the screw connection.
  5. Place the front on a table, face down. Then glue side panels and bottom plate to the front, let it dry. Finally, glue the back plate on it, also let it dry. Screw the screws through the pre-drilled holes.
  6. For the roof of the large bird house (turquoise roof) glue 2 sawed wooden strips to the inner panel, let it dry. Paint the roof in color.
  7. For the small house (gray roof) glue 2 parts of the roof together with 2 strips, let it dry. Paint the roof in color. Glue the painted rod into the pre-drilled hole. Put the roof on.

Make the bird house yourself - you need it:

  • Difficulty: heavy
  • 1 wooden board for side panels and front section, 1.50 m long, 15.5 cm wide, 3 cm thick
  • 1 board for the roof, 27 cm long, 17.5 wide, 3 cm thick
  • 1 wooden lath for the suspension, 48 cm long, 4 cm wide, 2 cm thick
  • 1 squarewood, 1.8 x 1.8 cm, 26 cm long
  • 2 small screws
  • 17 Spax screws, 5 cm long Ø 2 mm
  • 4 screws for the roof, 2.5 cm long, Ø 1.5 mm
  • 15 cm wire
  • saw
  • drilling machine
  • Hole saw attachment for manhole, Ø 3 cm
  • Cordless screwdriver or screwdriver
  • if necessary Kataba- saw for oblique cuts, z. Eg via www.manufactum.de

Making wooden birdhouses yourself - that's what you need:

  1. Download blueprint and print.
  2. Pre-drill the marked screw holes with the machine. 4 holes in the roof with 0.5 mm wood drill, other holes with 1 mm drill.
  3. Saw off a narrow side of the roof board at an angle as planned. To do this, draw different lengths on the front and back and draw lines across the whole board, sawing off at an angle (eg with a Kataba saw).
  4. Halve the square wood, screw both pieces to the inside of the roof as anti-slip protection (see blueprint).
  5. Front part as the roof beveled on one side according to plan. Drill in hole with hole saw.
  6. Saw 2 side panels, floor and back according to plan.
  7. Screw the front part with two screws per side onto the two short sides of the side parts.
  8. Slide the bottom part between the side parts and secure it sideways with two screws each.
  9. Insert the rear part and tighten it by the side parts with 3 screws each.
  10. Screw on top of the suspension bar with three screws in the middle of the rear part.
  11. Screw eyelet to the right side panel? she sits in the upper left corner, just under the roof.
  12. Put the roof on. Screw in the second eyelet on the right side of the roof so that it sits near the side eyelet. Thread 15 cm wire through both eyelets, twist ends. The wire secures the roof additionally.
