Instead of olfactory bottles: aromatherapy

Even in the last century, the lady of the good company had the olfactory bottle as an indispensable accessory always within reach: Threatened to faint, she opened the delicate closure of the vial and took a deep breath. And immediately she felt better. In our profane times, women are no longer allowed to faint, and even the olfactory bottle is out of fashion.

But today there is aromatherapy. It is based on the ancient recognition that certain fragrances affect the physical and mental well-being. The 300 essential oils of flowers, leaves, peel and woods are used for aromatherapy, from rosemary to melissa, lavender and juniper to lemon. Essential oils contain active ingredients in concentrated formThey must never be used undiluted but must be dissolved in a neutral oil (for example jojoba, almond).

application

There are several forms of aromatherapy: we can drip scented oils - with cream or honey as an emulsifier - into the bath water; We can loosen it in jojoba or almond oil and let it massaged or put a compress with a few drops of oil on aching body parts. Thanks to special aroma lamps, soothing scents can be distributed throughout the room.

The effect of aromas

People feel calmed, relaxed or even stimulated. The explanation for this: The sense of smell is closely linked to the areas of the brain responsible for controlling emotions. That is why some psycho-therapists use aromatic oils to assist a client in bringing back repressed memories. Some people use aromatherapy because they believe that the scent transmits the energy potential of the plants to humans - an idea that comes from the esoteric.

Intake of aromatic oil

If aroma oils are inhaled or rubbed in, they can also relieve physical complaints such as headaches (lavender, peppermint etc.), cough (thyme etc.) or cycle disorders (marjoram, lavender, chamomile). Internally, aroma oils may only be taken under expert guidance.Certain oils should not be used by pregnant women and the chronically ill (eg kidney patients, people with high blood pressure, epileptics). Because of the risks of the procedure, people who are inexperienced in it should not self-medicate, but should first seek advice from an aromatherapist or therapist.

The profession of aromatherapist is not yet recognized in Germany; So there is no prescribed uniform training course. Reputable therapists and cosmetologists who use aromatherapy call the Forum Essenzia e. V., Monika Werner, Mäuselweg 29, 81375 Munich (enclose stamped reply envelope). Aromatherapy is usually not paid by the statutory health insurance.
