A kingdom for the horses

Claudia Franke emigrated with horses and family to Denmark

"I emigrated a year ago with my family, our dog and our two Icelandic horses to Rømø, Denmark. The reason for that was especially the horses, They used to stand in a yard half an hour from our apartment in Pinneberg. Now Minning and Huginn live in a huge herd near the rider hotel where my husband and I work. They are outside all year round.

The landscape is ideal, there is an incredible breadth. Minning and Huginn can let off steam, they enjoy the sea air and swimming in the sea. My horse crazy family also feels very well. The only thing that was hard for us in the beginning was the language. In the meantime we can already speak Danish well. The island and the hotel we knew from holidays. At some point we had the idea to apply there - without knowing if they need anyone at all. In the hotel owner's reply email was: 'Come immediately.' We were very surprised but then quit our apartment within nine days and unsubscribed our 15-year-old daughter Hannah from school.

My husband, who used to work as an architect, is now responsible for the technology in the hotel. I'm sitting at the reception. Sometimes I take on horseback rides with the tourists and can combine hobby and work. Hannah goes to school with the Danish children. The best moment for us all was the first ride on the beach. It's a great feeling to gallop through the empty landscape. In the meantime we live in a house directly by the sea. And we bought another horse, Blika. "
