4 tips for better portrait pictures

Why do people often look so empty, mentally absent or unnatural on portraits?

Markus Püttmann, international portraitist and business coach, finds that people try to pose too often and thus lose the ability to look natural in front of the camera.
Even professional models or media experts rarely know how to work naturally. "My job is to get people to be approachable and confident in front of the camera, so they emit something that makes a positive impression on the viewer," says Püttmann.

How do you manage to express your personality so that it flatters the viewer? We asked Markus Püttmann for his top tips for better portraits and here are his advice:

1. BRING YOUR HEAD TO CAMERA

People are usually so in front of the camera that a double chin is visible. That's what few people like. The easy way to fix that is, "Bring your forehead toward the camera and lean forward slightly." From the side it looks like an E.T. Imitation. However, it appears much more natural on the screen and shows you much better than it feels.

2. USE THE TRICKS OF THE STARS

It sounds funny at first, but Markus Püttmann is convinced that people look a lot better when they close their eyes slightly. The key word here is easy? not as if you were reading a much too small line at the ophthalmologist.

3. LAUGH BETWEEN TIMELY

Most people tend to have an artificial smile. The mouth and eye area is not consistent with each other. If you want to know what a real smile looks like, stand in front of the mirror and bite across a pen and notice how the facial muscles feel.

4. FIND THE RIGHT CUTTING

The most important ingredient for a successful portrait is the crop of the image. There are a few basic rules. In addition, it is also a matter of taste. Markus Püttmann strictly adheres to the rule of thirds. This rule is based on the golden section. The picture is divided into nine equal parts with four lines (see picture). Two lines run horizontally, one third of the image height away from the top and bottom of the image. Two lines run vertically - one third each from the left and the right edge of the picture. If you place the striking objects on the vertical lines, the pictures are usually more interesting and harmonious. The eye line should be on the top line. Also in how far the picture is turned makes a big and decisive difference in the effect.
