30 years of the World Wide Web: Many people can not do without the Internet

Happy Birthday! The World Wide Web, which many people equate with the entire Internet, celebrates its 12th birthday on March 12, 2019. The computer scientist Tim Berners-Lee (63) first introduced his idea for the World Wide Web at the Research Center Cern in Geneva exactly 30 years ago, which made surfing possible in its present form.

Meanwhile, a third of all Germans can no longer imagine a life without the Internet, as shown by a recent online survey by "Opinion Matters" on behalf of the telecommunications company Cisco, attended by 1,009 people from Germany.

That's what people appreciate about the net

A total of 42 percent of respondents believe that the best thing about the modern Internet is the networking of people, 37 percent appreciate the improved communication and 34 percent believe in a simpler life through the network. After all, 27 percent appreciate that the Internet also enables a new way of working.

A whopping 36 percent would not have expected the internet to bring so many benefits before. With 49 percent, almost half of the respondents see benefits for the healthcare sector, while 46 percent would like to see better offers in this sector over the next 30 years. In the future, 44 percent of Germans would like to have more social justice in the future and as many as 60 percent would like to resort to even better educational programs in the future.

Why do Germans use the Internet?

The survey also shows what many Germans use the Internet for. According to the survey, 73 percent of respondents get up-to-date information, 68 percent talk in one way or another, and 65 percent use the network to stay in touch with friends and family.

Meanwhile, more than half of respondents over the age of 55 (52 percent) also find that the world of work has been heavily influenced by the Internet. For the 16-24 year olds this is only 46 percent. Cisco agrees with this survey value with the fact that younger participants often no longer perceive this influence properly, as they no longer know a world without the Internet.
